The Uncrafter: a wedding blog for the not-so-crafty bride

I joined my sorority about a year and a half ago, in January 2011.  If you ask almost any sorority woman about their experience, they'll say it was the best thing they could have done during college. This absolutely rings true for me! I'm only halfway done with my college career, but I know Alpha Chi will continue to be a huge part of my life well after I've graduated.  I've made some of my best friends and memories through Alpha Chi.  I'll never forget the long talks with my sisters, sitting on the rocks at Lake Michigan, or ordering late-night pizza (more often than we should have) with my roommates during finals weeks.

I started The Uncrafter in order to jumpstart my career as a wedding planner, and I see my position as our Recruitment Chair as a stepping stone to that! I'm still not done with my term, but I've had a blast planning everything so far and I can't wait until the big week in January when my committee's work all comes together. I've really learned that Greek life is not only a good way to expand your social circle, but prepares you for the real world as well!

I'll never forget my experience with Alpha Chi. I have gotten more out of it than I ever thought I could--best friends, better communication skills, leadership experience, the list goes on and on!

My favorite shirt was for our fundraiser for our national philanthropy (domestic violence awareness) this past fall.  It's a cute shirt with a great message!

My Greek experience started off in a pretty unorthodox manner. I only applied to universities with active Greek communities because I knew I wanted to join a sorority, yet I didn't even participate in recruitment my freshman year because I was hoping to avoid the week-long formal recruitment process. By the time spring recruitment arrived, though, I knew I wanted to be an ADPi, and they weren't taking new members in the spring. So, I ended up needing to go through formal recruitment anyway as a sophomore (which is fairly rare at Mizzou). Anyway, I ran for the executive board right away and served as the Panhellenic Delegate in 2010 and then was elected chapter president in 2011. After graduating in December 2011, I applied to be a Leadership Consultant and was offered the job in March of this year. I can't wait to start traveling for my consulting position in August!

I can summarize my Greek experience in one word: opportunity. When I say opportunity, most people probably think of the countless leadership opportunities that Greek organizations provide. There are individual leadership positions within the chapters, steering committees for campus-wide events and leadership positions for many Greek-specific initiatives. Leadership isn't the only opportunity the Greek community provides, however. There are also the countless opportunities for service, through our own chapter's philanthropies and other volunteer events, and, of course, the opportunity to gains hundreds or thousands of new sisters across the country. Almost anything you want to do, whether it be an academic, athletic, service-oriented or other pursuit, you can bet the Greek community has the right tools and programming to help you achieve that goal.

Alpha Gamma has a history of winning lots of Greek Weeks and Homecomings at Mizzou. My last year in school (2011), we won both Greek Week and Homecoming, and after Homecoming we got "All I Do is Win" shirts with the ADPi letters inside:

 

I think the Being Greek blog is a great resource for sorority women everywhere to connect with their active and alumnae sisters, both from their own chapters and other organizations. I'll be posting my schedules for my travels in 2012-2013 on my blog as I learn them, and I'd love to hear from you if I'll be stopping by your school, whether you're an ADPi or not! We can get coffee or frozen yogurt or something. :)

In Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional women’s music fraternity, I have been the Formal Chairperson, Sergeant-at-Arms, Fraternity Education chairperson, Treasurer, Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon Coordinator, and now, the President!

My favorite experiences are taking part in recruitment and social events. I love the initiation ceremony most of all, and how relevant it is to my profession and life.

My favorite shirt was the recruitment shirt from my sophomore year. The theme was SAI through the decades, and the shirt was 70s themed.

Zeta Tau Alpha

Zeta was honestly the greatest thing I could have ever done in college! It opened so many doors for me and really helped shape who I am today. I was the Website Chair my sophomore year where I created the brand new website which hadn't been updated in about 2 years! I also won the Shopaholic award at our Christmas Superlatives party, as well as the "What are all the packages?" Award at our senior banquet for all of the many online shopping purchases I made while living in the house. 


My favorite experiences were winning Greek Grind, a philanthropy dance event 2 years in a row, and getting 2nd place the other 2 years! Also, waking up at 5 in the morning for recruitment with my best friends, and absolutely bawling at Pref Rounds each year. I loved being able to raise so much money for Susan G Komen and breast cancer awareness (our philanthropy) and the lifelong friendships I've made and cherished since I joined 4 years ago. 

My favorite shirt was our summer tank! Currently wearing it actually...
